Superyacht tenders are increasing in length and weight as the demands from their owners and guests continue to push the boundaries. In this article, we'll explore our Tender Mooring Whips that are available for all sizes of superyacht tender, as well as outlining key areas to consider when you're looking for Tender Mooring Whips for your new tender or chase boat.
KEY AREAS TO CONSIDER
TENDER WEIGHT VS LENGTH, BEAM & FREEBOARD
Several manufactures across the industry claim that their largest Tender Mooring Whips can hold tenders up to 22,000kg (22 tons). From our own experience, we believe that this figure may be incorrect, the weight of the boat isn’t necessarily the main contributing factor to the operational capabilities of a Tender Mooring Whip.
What is more prevalent is the length, beam and freeboard of the tender as this will have a greater affect from wind, tide and swell within an anchorage. The beamier the tender, the longer the Tender Mooring Whip should be, to prevent the tender from riding up against the topsides.
STORAGE ONBOARD
All Tender Mooring Whips that are currently available on the market come in two sections to aid with product delivery and storage onboard however, most yachts keep their Tender Mooring Whips stored as one unit to reduce their installation time. It is worth checking to see if you have the available space onboard for the overall length of the Tender Mooring Whip that you are after.
WHAT SIZES DO WE OFFER?
We offer three different sizes of Tender Mooring Whip in our range to suit a variety of tenders and chase boats. If your tender is over 30ft (9m), we highly recommend opting for our 5.4m Pro Tender Mooring Whips. These are slightly thicker in diameter than our standard 4.2m and 4.8m whips offering greater strength and length for your larger, beamier tender. Please have a glance at the table below for our complete range along with our Tender Mooring Whip Base options.
WHAT WHIP BASE'S DO WE OFFER?
We have a whip base to suit almost any setup onboard your superyacht. By far the most popular whip base which we offer (also as part of our 'Tender Whip Kit') is our Stainless Steel Flush Base. These are manufactured from 316L Stainless Steel and have a mirror polished finish and are to be permanently installed onboard. We also have our increasingly popular Stanchion Whip Mount which has been designed to suit sailing yachts who may not have the access to install our Stainless Steel Flush Bases. The Stanchion Whip Mount is semi-permanent and offers a secure yet easy-to-use alternative to our standard Stainless Steel Flush Base. Please see below for our range and their features.
WHAT MATERIALS ARE OUR TENDER MOORING WHIPS MADE FROM?
All our Tender Mooring Whips are manufactured from glass fibre. This is because the whip pole needs to be of a sufficient thickness to withstand the pressure and forces applied when they are under tension as well as retaining the ability to spring back to their original shape when not in use. We have explored the use of carbon fibre however, carbon fibre is notoriously stiff and during dynamic loading, the fibres have a tendency to fail without warning. Furthermore, the cost of carbon fibre has skyrocketed in recent years and we feel that even the largest Tender Mooring Whip shouldn't cost the earth.
